พระธาตุมรุกขนคร สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๖
ลักษณะคล้ายพระธาตุพนม แต่เล็กกว่าก่ออิฐถือปูนเป็นผงสี่เหลี่ยม ฐานกว้างด้านละ ๒๐
เมตร พระธาตุสูง ๕๐.๙ เมตร มีความหมายว่า
สร้างขึ้นในโอกาสที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรง ครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๕๐ ปี
และจุด ๙ หมายถึงรัชกาลที่ ๙
โดยได้รับการอุปถัมภ์จากหม่อมหลวงทวีสันต์ ลดาวัลย์ ซึ่งเป็น ราชเลขาธิการ
และคุณหญิงบุญศรี สนธยางกูลพร้อมด้วยศรัทธาญาติโยมจากทั่วสารทิศทุกหนแห่ง
พระธาตุมรุกขนคร เป็น พระธาตุบริวารของพระธาตุพนมองค์ที่อายุน้อยที่สุด
แต่วัดมรุกขนคร มีอายุเกือบสามร้อยปีมาแล้ว สร้างโดยพระบรมราชา
ท่านเจ้าเมืองมรุกขนคร เคยเป็นวัดประจำเมืองที่มีความเจริญมาก จนถึงปี พ.ศ. ๒๓๑๐
